Township Community Living
Students are constantly being bombarded by information about Greenhouse gas, global warming, peak oil, recycling, water restrictions… in fact minimal impact everything. Most adults find all of this challenging so it would be very easy to see how school age students would see that the world’s current environmental and possible economic woes are almost insurmountable.
Auscamp has designed a Sustainable Living education program to try to address some of these issues and concerns and demonstrate to students that they can have an impact and effect change in both their life and the world.
We have taken a ‘standard’ Outdoor Education program and worked out ways to address many of these issues in a hands on manner. We have kept those parts of a program that students love… the activities plus we have added other activities and even included an opportunity for normal classes to occur within the program.
Charnwood Outdoor Education centre in the Strathbogie Ranges, is the perfect location for running week long or longer programs where students can come and experience, live and learn about sustainability and lifestyle. In this environment they are able to experience the direct effects. The students would live their day to day life with all the modern conveniences, hot water, good food, cinemas, internet, outdoor adventure activities and so on. They would however see and experience that all this comes at a cost. To have these modern conveniences they would have to contribute directly to the program. For example to heat the buildings they would need to cut wood and keep the boiler stoked, manage and record the operation of the waste water treatment plant, operate the recycling system and assist with the livestock.
This program enables the students to experience the affects of their “footprint” on the environment and consequently climate change. This can all be tied into the school curriculum and linked to Victorian Educational Learning Standards (VELS).
